On May 27, 1997, a tornado roared across Sumner County that destroyed at least two homes and several outbuildings.

The twister touched down near the Harper County line south of Argonia, and traveled east, narrowly missing Perth. It began it's damage between 100th and 110th Streets South when it struck and demolished a vacant house along U.S. 81.  It then continued east to West Rd where it destroyed an unoccupied home and did major damage to another home just a quarter of a mile east. Luckily, there were no injuries.
